New Theme: Higher Ground

John Sieber has created a new free theme called Higher Ground based on a Styleshout's CSS template. The theme has been made available to everyone and you can download it from your blog administration.

I've made a couple of modifications and fixes to the original theme that John did, so you may want to re-download it from your admin if you already have it.

Thanks John!

Vigilance Theme Updated

I've released an update to the Vigilance theme. It fixes some issues with the archives and some other issues with the sidebar. This update requires Mango 1.4.2, so you'll need to upgrade Mango before using the updated theme.

To download, go to your administration and then to the Themes page. You should see a notice about the update, and a link to download. The zip contains a readme file with some notes about the sidebars and what is included in the update.

New Theme: Vigilance

Benedict Lowndes has created a new free theme. The theme has been made available to everyone and you can download it from your blog administration.

I've made a couple of modification and fixes to the original theme that Benedict did, so I recommend to download it from the admin instead of from his website.

Thanks Benedict and great job!

New Default Theme: Cutline

For Mango 1.4, I decided to add a new default theme. This theme includes many of the new features added to release 1.4, so it requires that version. For this theme, I wanted to show how to add a custom login screen and how to modify the comments form to automatically enter the currently logged in user information in comments. It also includes a custom page for a listing of the Archives, which you can enable by adding a new page and settings its page template to the Archives Listing Page.

Although it is not a new feature, Cutline shows how you can have RSS feeds per category. In addition, the author page will show links to the latest blog posts for the selected author.

To enhance SEO (search engine optimization), this theme will check if the post or page contains a custom field for description, called "meta-description" and if so, it will use that for the description <meta> tag. I am hoping this will become a standard in themes, so this SEO enhancement will be always available.

This theme is available for download from your Themes adminstration screen.
